ŽIDOVSKA OPĆINA SPLIT

VIŠE O NAMA

SINAGOGA

The old Jewish cemetery of Split was established in 1573 on the eastern slopes of the Marjan hill, overlooking the city. It is within the walking distance from the city center, some 10-15 minutes slow walk uphill.

ŽIDOVI U DALMACIJI

While it may be difficult to establish a precise date for the arrival of earliest Jewish traders to the Adriatic, we have enough evidence to set up the period between 3rd and 5th centuries for their presence.

Sinagoga u World Monuments Fund

The city of Split has a long history of Jewish presence, dating back to the seventh century after nearby Salona (now Solin) was destroyed by the Avars, forcing a community that had been in existence there since the third century a.d. to flee and find protection within Diocletian’s fortified palace. Only a few menorahs inscribed on stone blocks of Diocletian’s Palace testify to the early presence of Jews in Split.
